Ubuntu is switching the default search from Google to Yahoo!

Those of you testing out the development version of Ubuntu Lucid should notice a change in Firefox very soon. The default search provider for new installations of Ubuntu Lucid (10.04) and upgrades will be Yahoo! and not Google.

Canonical have struck a revenue sharing deal with Yahoo! which generates income for the company. This revenue should help pay the wages of Ubuntu Developers employed by Canonical, and support the infrastructure required to develop and build the distribution.

When using the search box in the top right corner of Firefox on Ubuntu, you’ll be taken to a Yahoo! results page rather than the old default Google one. If you are upgrading to Ubuntu 10.04 and you had Google as your search provider (the previous default) then this will change to Yahoo!. You can of course change the search provider, this is merely the default for Lucid. Doing so will mean your search revenue won’t go via Yahoo! to Canonical. That’s your choice, clearly.

In addition, the browser ’start page’ – that is the page you see initially when you open the browser – will reflect whatever the default search provider is. So in the top right, if you choose ‘Google’ you’ll get the Google start page, and conversely if you choose ‘Yahoo!’ you’ll get the Yahoo! start page when you first open the browser. Again, you can change the start page to be blank or use some other search provider. These are just the new defaults.

How to Downgrade Gnome Display Manager 2.28 to 2.20 in Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic)

IMHO the new gdm 2.28 shipped by default with Ubuntu 9.10 is really just work in progress. It’s fine for what it currently supports, but it does not support the range of functionality that gdm 2.20 does. Perhaps the biggest issue is Multiseat X. Multiseat X is one of the best things about Linux. You can have several independent workstations all on the same computers, each with their own X Server. Apart from anything else, this can reduce a group of users’ carbon footprint by needing fewer computers and should be something that Ubuntu is shouting about and not hiding in some “legacy package” with all its negative implications.

Not only that, the gdm-2.20 package shipped with Ubuntu 9.10 is broken!

Procedure to Follow

1. Login in to your ubuntu 9.10 system

2. Open up a command line console (Applications->Accessories->Terminal) and enter the following command

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop

This will stop gdm, GUI and drop you back into a command line console. A necessary step for downgrading.

3. Login to the command line console and enter the following command

sudo apt-get install gdm-2.20

This will do the necessary work of removing gdm 2.28 and replacing it with 2.20. When prompted to select the default display manager, select “gdm-2.20″.

4. Now you have to fix the broken gdm.conf. Enter

cd /etc/gdm

sudo sed ’s|X11R6/||’ gdm.conf >/tmp/gdm.conf

sudo mv /tmp/gdm.conf .

Note:- the period character at the end of the line – you really do need it

This will edit out the offending entries and replace the broken gdm.conf

5. Start your gdm using the following command

sudo gdm

or

startx

How to Enable Ctrl + Alt + BackSpace in Ubuntu Jaunty

By default Ctrl + Alt + BackSpace key combination in Ubuntu Jaunty was disabled.This shortcut key is used to restart X.This tutorial will explain how to enable this key combunation.

Install the “dontzap” package using the following command

sudo apt-get install dontzap

Open Terminal and type

sudo dontzap --enable

sudo dontzap --disable

Where “disable” means that Ctrl+Alt+Backspace restarts the xserver while “enable” means that it won’t.

How to install google gadgets in Ubuntu 9.4(Jaunty)

Google Gadgets for Linux provides a platform for running desktop gadgets under Linux, catering to the unique needs of Linux users. We are compatible with the gadgets written for Google Desktop for Windows as well as the Universal Gadgets on iGoogle. Following Linux norms, this project will be open-sourced, under the Apache License.

The Windows and Mac versions of Google Desktop has provided gadget hosting functionality on Windows and Mac for a while now and the Linux version of Google Gadgets will extend this platform to Linux users. By enabling cross-platform gadgets, a large library of existing gadgets are immediately available to Linux users. In addition, gadget developers will benefit from a much larger potential user base without having to learn a new API.

There’s two main components to the application: one is a common gadget library responsible for running and presenting a gadget, and the other is a host program that allows the user to choose gadgets and run them on the desktop. Currently we have hosts written for GTK+ and QT, with the GTK+ host offering a sidebar similiar to that of Google Desktop for Windows.

Install Google Gadgets in ubuntu 9.04

If you want to install google gadgets use the following command

sudo apt-get install google-gadgets-gtk

This will install the following packages

You can open Google gadgets go to Applications >Internet >Google Gadgets (GTK)

What is VirtualBox?
VirtualBox is an x86 virtualization software package, originally created by German software company innotek, now developed by Sun Microsystems as part of its Sun xVM virtualization platform. How to install VirtualBox in Ubuntu Jaunty?
(For VirtualBox 2.2.2)
1. Open your terminal and type gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

2. In file this, type deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian jaunty non-free in last of all and click SAVE.

3. After that, in terminal type wget -q http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian/sun_vbox.asc -O- | sudo apt-key add -

4. Then, type sudo aptitude update

5. Lastly, type sudo aptitude install virtualbox-2.2

P/S: After installation, go to System > Administration > Users and Groups. Click Unlock in that window. Select user and click Properties. In Properties, select User Privileges and tick "Use VirtualBox" click Ok. Reboot, after that you can see VirtualBox in your Applications. Now it ready to use. Peace!!!

Linux eventually garners a 1% market share

Linux has garnered the magical 1% global market share of computer users. As of April 2009, it is exactly 1.02 %. It is an understood fact that we have a long way to go to catch up with the market leader Windows which is still way ahead at 87.90%. But 1.02% of the total computer users the world over is by no means a small amount.

If this trend is to be believed, people are waking up to the various alternatives they have over Windows. If you take a closer look at the chart below, you will find that the Windows share has been decreasing across subsequent months - October 2008 being an exception. And the market share of all other Operating systems have seen an increase during these periods.

Let's hope the Linux share increase rapidly in the coming years to form a viable force in the desktop computing arena.

How to import & export MySQL database from command line

This tip would be useful for those who are either making backup of their remote mysql database or moving their web hosting to their provider.

Here’s how to export mysql DB to SQL file using command-line utility :
mysqldump –user=username –password=1234 –databases your_database –opt –quote-names –complete-insert > example.sql

Here’s how to import the SQL back into mysql database :
mysql –user=username –password=1234 –databases your_database –host=mysql_server host

Don’t forget to add your ip address to the list of allowable host on the remote MySQL server!

How to Generate Barcode in OpenOffice.org

I found this extension as I was searching for a great application to generate EAN-13 compatible barcode. This OpenOffice.org extension allows you to generate 5 different types of barcode generally found in the market, such as:

UPC-A (the most common barcode in the US)
EAN-13 (the most common barcode in Europe)
JAN (the barcode used in Japan, basically EAN-13 with the country code for Japan)
ISBN-13 (the barcode used in books after 2007, basically EAN-13 with a superscript)
ISBN-10 (the barcode used in books before 2007, basically EAN-13 with a different superscript)

Here’s how to install the extension :

First go to OpenOffice.org extensions website, then search for the barcode extension
Download the extension - barcode.oxt
Then start OpenOffice.org, go to Tools and select Extension Manager
When a dialog appears, click on Add, then find and select barcode.oxt, the extension will be installed on your OpenOffice.org
To test the extension, start OpenOffice.org Draw, go to Insert, and selects Barcode, you can choose any of the barcode type to generate inside OpenOffice.org, type in the barcode value and it will be displayed on the page, with no extra effort!

AVG for Linux

There’s news that AVG has a new version for Linux with AVG 8.5. It is said to have editions available for servers and workstations. Here is a run-down of the features of this software :

Maybe those who are running small businesses might want to consider using AVG for their needs. I’ve encountered some people who use AVG on their Windows computers and they swear by it. I personally used it for a time but right now, I only turn to ClamAV for my needs. At least this is one more option for us who would like to make sure our Linux machines are not breeding grounds for malware. After all, these viruses might affect other users who would like to access your machine, especially if they are on Windows. As they say: an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure. But do note that AVG has a price tag of 163USD per year for every 10 client access.

Firefox 3.0.10 fixes critical vulnerability

The Mozilla developers have announced the release of version 3.0.10 of their open source Firefox web browser. The security and stability release addresses a critical security vulnerability introduced in Firefox 3.0.9.

The vulnerability is a regression which in some cases caused frequent crashes. Users running the HTML Validator add-on were particularly affected, although other users also experienced the crashes. The problem was due to memory corruption, similar to problems identified as security vulnerabilities in the past.

More details about the release can be found in the release notes. Firefox 3.0.10 is available to download, or Firefox users can use the Firefox update service by selecting Help, then Check For Updates.

Mandriva Linux 2009 Spring released

Mandriva has announced the launch of the final version of Mandriva Linux 2009 Spring (codename Pauillac). This new version comes with a host of improvements and changes, as always. Fun fact: this is the first release reported to us by Anne Nicolas instead of Adam Williamson. For those that keep score.

The Mandriva Linux 2009 Spring comes in the flavour of your choice, KDE, GNOME or LXDE, in more than 70 languages. There's the Free edition (100% open source software) in 2 DVDs for 32 and 64 architecture and the One edition (installable live CD, available in KDE and GNOME versions). Major updates includes KDE 4.2.2, GNOME 2.26, Xorg server 1.6, Linux kernel 2.6.29, Xfce 4.6, Qt Creator 1, Tcl/Tk 8.6, syslinux 3.75, and much more.

Mandriva Linux 2009 Spring comes with an improvement in boot time. The tools of Mandriva Control Center have also been optimised. Network center now supports advanced network configuration together with additional pre-configured Internet providers, integration with new network devices and support for different wireless regulatory domains. msev, the Mandriva security framework, has been also redesigned.

The ext4 file system is now supported in the stable version and proposed during installation. Last update of syslinux comes with the HDT module (Hardware Detection Tool), which brings you a way to detect all your hardware before booting your system.

Ubuntu as slick as Win7, Mac OS X

Here's what the official press release won't tell you about Ubuntu 9.04, which formally hit the streets overnight: its designers have polished the hell out of its user interface since the last release in October.

So much so, in fact, that I am starting to prefer using my Ubuntu "Jaunty Jackalope" desktop over the similarly slick Windows 7 beta (which I am currently running full-time on one desktop) and Mac OS X Leopard operating systems, which I also use regularly.

I left Windows Vista, XP and even Debian lying bruised and battered by the roadside some time ago.

You won't be able to notice the vast improvement in Ubuntu's desktop experience over the past six months by browsing screenshot galleries of 9.04 or looking at new feature lists. What I'm talking about is that elusive slick and speedy feel you get from applications launching fast, windows moving around without jerkiness and everything simply being where it should be in the user interface.

Launching and using Firefox on Ubuntu 8.10 on my 2GHz Core 2 Duo-based machine with 2GB of RAM, a 7200rpm hard disk and an Nvidia GeForce 8800GTS always seemed to feel like I was going back a few years to a time when web browsers were not considered something you always had open to service web applications like Gmail and Bloglines.

It was the same with Windows Vista.

Now, just like Microsoft has taken the blowtorch to Vista to produce the lightning-quick Windows 7, which so far runs well even on older hardware, Ubuntu has picked up its own game.

I particularly noticed the Ubuntu difference when I put the operating system to the test by simultaneously launching and using multiple applications, listening to music and more while using my spare CPU cycles in the background to encode high-definition video with Mencoder. Ubuntu still felt very fast ... even with traditionally sluggy pieces of software like OpenOffice.org.

It's not just the speed changes, however, that has got me excited about Ubuntu 9.04. It's also the subtle additions to the interface; the logical move of shut down and reboot options to the far right of the menu; the slick new notifications system; the seamless (finally!) integration of the Nvidia accelerated drivers and the cleaned-up options and package install systems.

Want Adobe Flash or other proprietary software like multimedia codecs on Ubuntu? Just search for them in the one location, under their own names. No downloading anything from any websites. No package management or dependencies. No apt-get. Point and click.

I'm not a Linux novice (in fact, I'm a former Linux and FreeBSD systems administrator), and I've been using Linux on the desktop since the late 1990s. I usually run a combination of Ubuntu and Windows on my PC, and the latest Mac OS X on my laptop.

So I'm in a position to notice step changes in user interface behaviour like the one that Ubuntu has brought to the table with 9.04. In short, Ubuntu is now as slick and beautiful as Mac OS X or Windows 7.

As we've noted in earlier articles, Microsoft has also brought its best to the table with Windows 7. However, it's a pity Apple didn't seem to do so with Leopard ... like some reviewers, I felt Steve Job's latest operating system opus added a lot of new features, but also some unfortunate erratic behavior that muddied Mac OS X's position as a user interface leader.

As MacWorld has noted, the new Stacks feature in Leopard's Dock is a "mess" and replaced the formerly utilitarian approach to keeping folders in the Dock with a "snazzy but generally less useful pop-up window".

The new "Spaces" feature in Leopard is nothing new; it provides multiple virtual desktop work spaces which Unix has had for decades; but I found Apple's implementation erratic.

Then too, there was the speed price some users paid in Leopard for all the upgrade, although that could just be the older hardware penalty. On my 1.5GHz G4 laptop with 1280MB of RAM, Leopard runs sluggishly, whereas Tiger runs like a dream. As I don't use any of the new features, the upgrade seemed worthless.

When you consider Microsoft's remarkable rebirth with Windows 7 and the fact that Ubuntu is free, open source and runs on anything, you would have to wonder what sort of rabbit Steve Jobs will have to pull out of his hat with Snow Leopard to keep growing Mac OS X's share. Sure, there are some apps missing on Linux (say, Photoshop). But the same can be said of Mac OS X in certain areas, and VMware and CrossOver solve a lot of problems.

Looking back to the genesis of Ubuntu 9.04 six months ago, I suspect that its subtle but powerful changes are due to the new user interface team that Ubuntu founder Mark Shuttleworth said at the time he would put in place. If so, that team has already earned its pay checks and even more, and we're looking forward to seeing what another six months of development will produce.

In the meantime, kudos to Ubuntu 9.04: you got game.

Yes! Mark Shuttleworth has finally released the new 9.10 codename, it’s Karmic Koala! Mark Shuttleworth also wrote a couple of features that will be added in Karmic Koala like using plymouth, just like in Fedora. And I’m quite interested when saw that Mark is planned to change the whole desktop look(boot screen, splash screen, themes, and others) inside Ubuntu 9.10. I’m not really expecting that Jaunty Jackalope dekstop look will totally change :)

Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to introduce the Karmic Koala, the newest member of our alliterative menagerie.

When you are looking for inspiration beyond the looming Jaunty feature freeze, I hope you’ll think of the Koala, our official mascot for Ubuntu 9.10. And if you’ll bear with me for a minute I’ll set the scene for what we hope to achieve in that time.

Server

A good Koala knows how to see the wood for the trees, even when her head is in the clouds. Ubuntu aims to keep free software at the forefront of cloud computing by embracing the API’s of Amazon EC2, and making it easy for anybody to setup their own cloud using entirely open tools. We’re currently in beta with official Ubuntu base AMI’s for use on Amazon EC2. During the Karmic cycle we want to make it easy to deploy applications into the cloud, with ready-to-run appliances or by quickly assembling a custom image. Ubuntu-vmbuilder makes it easy to create a custom AMI today, but a portfolio of standard image profiles will allow easier collaboration between people doing similar things on EC2. Wouldn’t it be apt for Ubuntu to make the Amazon jungle as easy to navigate as, say, APT?

What if you want to build an EC2-style cloud of your own? Of all the trees in the wood, a Koala’s favourite leaf is Eucalyptus. The Eucalyptus project, from UCSB, enables you to create an EC2-style cloud in your own data center, on your own hardware. It’s no coincidence that Eucalyptus has just been uploaded to universe and will be part of Jaunty - during the Karmic cycle we expect to make those clouds dance, with dynamically growing and shrinking resource allocations depending on your needs. A savvy Koala knows that the best way to conserve energy is to go to sleep, and these days even servers can suspend and resume, so imagine if we could make it possible to build a cloud computing facility that drops its energy use virtually to zero by napping in the midday heat, and waking up when there’s work to be done. No need to drink at the energy fountain when there’s nothing going on. If we get all of this right, our Koala will help take the edge off the bear market.

If that sounds rather open and nebulous, then we’ve hit the sweet spot for cloud computing futurology. Let me invite you to join the server team at UDS in Barcelona, when they’ll be defining the exact set of features to ship in October.

Desktop

First impressions count. We’re eagerly following the development of kernel mode setting, which promises a smooth and flicker-free startup. We’ll consider options like Red Hat’s Plymouth, for graphical boot on all the cards that support it. We made a splash years ago with Usplash, but it’s time to move to something newer and shinier. So the good news is, boot will be beautiful. The bad news is, you won’t have long to appreciate it! It only takes 35 days to make a whole Koala, so we think it should be possible to bring up a stylish desktop much faster. The goal for Jaunty on a netbook is 25 seconds, so let’s see how much faster we can get you all the way to a Koala desktop. We’re also hoping to deliver a new login experience that complements the graphical boot, and works well for small groups as well as very large installations.

For those of you who can relate to Mini Me, or already have a Dell Mini, the Ubuntu Netbook Edition will be updated to include all the latest technology from Moblin, and tuned to work even better on screens that are vertically challenged. With millions of Linux netbooks out there, we have been learning and adapting usability to make the Koala cuddlier than ever. We also want to ensure that the Netbook Remix installs easily and works brilliantly on all the latest netbook hardware, so consider this a call for testing Ubuntu 9.04 if you’re the proud owner of one of these dainty items.

The desktop will have a designer’s fingerprints all over it - we’re now beginning the serious push to a new look. Brown has served us well but the Koala is considering other options. Come to UDS for a preview of the whole new look.

Jaunty Jackalope Beta Di Lepaskan

Versi beta Ubuntu 9.04 telah pun dilepaskan pada hari Jumaat yang lepas, memperlihatkan dan memberi para pengguna pengalaman apa yang bakal dihidangkan pada versi akhir Ubuntu 9.04 kelak. Ubuntu 9.04 yang diberi nama kod Jaunty Jackalope bakal memperkenalkan pelbagai perkara baru, dan antaranya adalah sistem notifikasi yang serba baru, selain perubahan antaramuka dan pengenalan kepada cloud-computing.

Wallpaper Baru Yang Bakal Di Perkenalkan Pada Ubuntu 9.04

Ia juga bakal menyertakan sekali semua teknologi terbaru dalam dunia sumber terbuka dan linux, termasuk antaramuka GNOME 2.26, kernel Linux 2.6.28 dan juga teknologi server X.org versi 1.6. Ubuntu 9.04 juga bakal menyokong sistem fail ext4.
